Test Your Car's Battery Using the Voltmeter and Safety Gear

To get an accurate reading on the strength of your car battery, grab a volt meter, wire brush, safety goggles, and thick pair of work gloves. Once the car lights and engine are off, put on the glasses and gloves and grab the wire brush.

Clean the battery terminals to create a clean contact point for the voltmeter. To correctly attach the voltmeter to the car battery, it is red cable to battery positive side, black cable to negative battery side. When the voltmeter returns a reading of 12.4 or better, the battery is in excellent working condition and you don't have any concerns. If the number however is 12.2 or less, the battery is experiencing charging issues and might not have the cranking power to start your vehicle.
